Photo is from Lillie’s Five Sentence Ficton.

This week, the word is Thunder.

Lightning streaks across the sky, the darkness illuminated in a flash of light.

I count the seconds, “one-one thousand, two-one thousand…….

The sound of thunder echoes in the otherwise silent night.

Quickly, I calculate the distance, the storm is still a distance a way.

another flash of lightning…. Again I count.

  1. I remember doing this as a child., This was long before the National Weather Service began issuing the warning about “if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning”.

  2. I did this countless times – especially when I was younger. It took me back many years when I used to do this from the top floor of my grandmother’s house where I could see the show and count the time between the flash and the boom. Very simple and very good!
